Hakonechloa 'All Gold'

Hakonechloa ‘All Gold’is a charming, all gold version of the most elegant hardy ornamental grass, the beautiful hakon grass.

Hakonechloa 'All Gold'

Gorgeous from spring to autumn
This gorgeous beauty lights up semi-shady places with arching blades of soft, golden-yellow foliage that pokes through the ground in spring and lasts through the entire growing season until late autumn and early winter.

Reminiscent of a dwarf bamboo (but much better behaved), it forms slow spreading clumps that only get to about 10-14 inches tall. I hesitate to mention the word bamboo because it immediately conjures up images of vigorous spreading roots, but with this cutie you don't have to worry because it will never become a nuisance. It does spread, but very slowly, and through time will form a waving, golden leaved mound that can be as wide as 18 inches or so. A stunning sight that only gets better as it becomes larger and more established.

Create the Midas touch with these simple design ideas

According to Greek mythology, King Midas turned everything he touched into gold. Now you can give your garden the Midas touch using this striking variety. It is very effective as an edger, or as a spectacular accent near the front of beds and borders, foundation plantings, rock gardens, sloping and raised beds, or woodland gardens. It is wonderful in small spaces and great for lining paths and driveways where the foliage can spill out and drape over the edges of the hard surfaces.

Hakonechloa 'All Gold'

As the common name, Japanese Forest Grass, suggests it is a wonderful choice for partially shaded locations; anywhere that gets dappled shade or protection from the burning rays of hot afternoon sun is ideal.

With adequate moisture at its roots, it will grow in sunny conditions, but the beautiful foliage will color up better with some shade. It is better to place it somewhere that offers some protection, and, since it is often difficult to get long lasting colorful plants that thrive in shady sites, it should be easy to find a suitable place for it. It will grow in shadier conditions, too, but in declining light levels it tends to be more open and lax in habit with the color verging more towards shades of chartreuse and light green.

The light, delicate looking foliage lights up shady places, and the shimmering clumps billowing in a breeze are a perfect way to create focal points that catch the eye and draw attention to areas that are to be viewed from a distance. When massed, they make magnificent drifts of dazzling, low maintenance ground cover. It is also a super container plant; how about trying it in pots, window boxes, or troughs on decks, patios, swimming pools, balconies, and roof gardens? Just make sure that the containers have drainage holes and are filled with a good, free-draining compost, and you should find that it will spread out and cascade down and over the edges to make a stunning display.

Hardy and easy to grow

Hakonechloa 'All Gold'

Easy to grow and maintain
Descended from a single species that inhabits rain and mist soaked cliffs in the volcanic mountainous region of Mt. Fuji's five lakes in Japan, it is an easy and accommodating plant to grow. All it needs is a reasonably fertile soil that is free draining and rich in humus matter. It does not tolerate waterlogged conditions or long periods of drought, so having a well-drained soil that has the capacity to retain moisture during dry periods is important.

At planting time, it is well worth incorporating extra organic matter in the planting hole, and then supplementing this by mulching around the plants each spring. Careful attention should be paid to watering them until they become established, and if prolonged drought conditions occur after this, it may be necessary to carry out some periodic watering, just to keep them nice and healthy and growing well.

I like to trim away the old remaining foliage from the previous year growth each spring; this spring tidy up means that when the new fresh foliage appears, it is nice and clean and fresh looking, and it makes me feel better too! Other than this, little else is required to keep your plants in good order.
