Plant Features

Veronica 'Purpleicious'

Common name: Speedwell

Veronica ‘Purpleicious’ is a marvelous perennial speedwell with sensational purple flowers.

Plant Description

A true standout

Veronica ‘Purpleicious’ is the darkest flowered form of spiked speedwell we have ever seen. On top of that, it is a bushy and compact grower that is free flowering and long blooming. The densely packed spikes are displayed beautifully above luxuriant, dark green glossy foliage.

And as you will see below, it makes for a great cutflower for jazzing up your indoors. In fact, as you will read in the plant story below, that was one of the features the grower was looking for when developing Veronica ‘Purpleicious’.

Plant Care

The Planting and Growing Recipe

Hardy and Easy to Grow
Veronica ‘Purpleicious’
is hardy throughout our northeast region. It is an easy and reliable grower that thrives in a sunny to partially shaded location in any well-drained soil. To get off to the best possible start, it is important to improve the soil by adding extra organic material at planting time, it performs best in soils that are free draining but stay uniformly moist during the growing season. So, adding the extra humus will encourage quick root development and also help to keep it growing and flowering well through the rest of the season. Water thoroughly after planting and then occassionaly if the soil dries out. Lightly mulching the beds will also help to conserve moisture during any dry periods.

To keep Veronica ‘Purpleicious’ re-blooming remove the old flower spikes as they fade; this promotes fresh new growth which in turn will provide renewed flowering.

The Story Behind The Plant

Bred for its improved characteriscs and unique color

Veronica ‘Purpleicious’ was bred by Jan Verschoor of Haarlem, The Netherlands. This new color break came out of a planned breeding program that began with a cross in 1998 and culminated with its selection in 2003. Jan says he set out to develop a range of improved Veronica varieties for the cut flower industry. He wanted to produce ones with longer flower spikes, strong sturdy stems, superior disease resistance, strong re-blooming capabilities and "MORE COLORS". A horticultural friend, Mr. Gert van Buren, noticed some of his seedlings and recognized that they had potential as garden plants. It is from one of these new selections that Veronica ‘Purpleicious’ was chosen.
