Geum 'Mango Lassi'

Geum ‘Mango Lassi’, with its rich, radiant color tones, tidy, compact growth habit, and bright green, textured foliage is the perfect way to pep up and add vibrant sizzle to your garden display.

Geum 'Mango Lassi'

Sumptuous semi-double flowers
Well-branched stems produce lots of semi-double flowers in sumptuous shades of soft orange and mango. The 1” inch (or more) wide rosettes are carried prominently above the foliage to provide a dazzling display when viewed from any distance, but when viewed up close they are simply divine. Each unfolding blossom opens to reveal an exquisite, saffron colored pattern that delicately highlights the veining over the other exotic hues.

Evergreen and months of easy to look after color

In most locations, the tidy hummock of soft, scalloped leaves will remain evergreen to provide valuable ground cover throughout most of the year. In sheltered spots and mild regions, it can begin flowering as early as mid spring, but in most locations it usually bursts forth with strong flushes in late spring or early summer. It will continue well into mid-summer, and sometimes trimming (see Plant Care notes on removing spent flowers) encourages it to yield another lighter flush in autumn.

Geum 'Mango Lassi'

  • The tidy, clump-forming habit and attractive foliage makes them great for positioning near the front of perennial beds and borders, foundation plantings, or mixed in with other perennials, shrubs, grasses, or evergreens.
  • The eye-catching color really grabs attention, making them super focal or accent plants.
  • When placed alongside paths and walkways, they will look fantastic as edging or nifty additions to beds around patios and swimming pools.
  • They are wonderful massed together as ground cover.
  • They do well in lightly shaded situations, so they are perfect for woodland gardens or town gardens that may be shaded by tall buildings.
  • Geums (or Avens as they are commonly called) are old time, dependable favorites — perfect for cottage style gardens or beds around historic homes.
  • Because our Garden Splendor® specimens are premium-sized, and ready to make an immediate impact, they are marvelous for new gardens, or anywhere that a shot of instantaneous and prolonged color is required.
  • Finally, they make good cut flowers, so they are useful for brightening and decorating the interior of your home.

Hardy and easy to grow

Geum 'Mango Lassi'

Mango Lassi is a zone 5 plant and therefore hardy throughout our northeast region. It is easy to grow, and is not prone to any major plant diseases or pests.

  • Thrives best in well-drained soils that have been enriched with plenty of organic matter.
  • It is worth improving the ground with extra humus at planting time and mulching regularly to help retain moisture in summer.
  • Older, established clumps should be divided occasionally, to maintain vigor and keep them flowering well.
  • Avoid places that may become wet in winter or early spring.
  • Remove spent flowers and stems to prolong flowering and encourage renewed bloom. A few minutes spent on this will prove invaluable in increasing the longevity and quantity of bloom.

Discovered in Oregon and named for a delicious Indian drink

Geum 'Mango Lassi'

Geum ‘Mango Lassi’ was discovered as a sport or mutation of Geum ‘Georgenberg’ by Grace Dinsdale, owner of Blooming Nursery in Cornelius, Oregon. She named it Mango Lassi because the color of the flowers reminded her of a popular drink from the Punjab region of India. This delicious concoction, made from yogurt and mango pulp, is regularly featured on the menus in Indian restaurants. In upscale places, it is occasionally sweetened with honey and the color intensifies by stirring in a few flecks of saffron, giving it streaks of tropical color so reminiscent of this beauty.

Mango Lassi is an enchanting and beguiling plant that will put verve and a perky presence into your garden. It has performed well in our trials and emerged as a favorite of all who have seen and grown it. It is an excellent example of how our Garden Splendor® brand of plants bring you “the best of the tried and true and the most promising of the exciting and new!”
